Epic adrenaline-fueled outdoor adventure set against spectacular Lake Tahoe may be breathtaking for some but for those set to participate in this weekend’s Lake Tahoe Marathon and Tough Mudder challenges — lung-pounding agility comes to mind.
Each fall brings thousands of weekend warriors, amateur runners and even a few pro athletes to the lake, many staying at The Ridge Tahoe. With miles of hiking and bike trails outside the Ridge’s front door, a full-on sports complex, swimming pool, and spa, Ridge guests competing this weekend will check into their accommodations and acclimate themselves to the high altitude. Hearty workouts come with hearty meals, and the Ridge Tahoe delivers – breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The running of the 18th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon at Tahoe South is Sept. 27-29, and Tough Mudder at Northstar California Resort, Sept. 28-29.
More than running occurs at the annual Lake Tahoe Marathon. The weekend includes The Optimist Kids Fun Runs, 5K and 10K races, 3 different half marathons, a 20 Miler race, and 3 different full marathon options. You can review the many options and register online.
The point-to-point runs pass some of the world’s greatest scenery in California and Nevada. Challenges await half and full marathoners as they climb and descend along Lake Tahoe’s western shore in California heading toward South Shore.
The run includes the switchback hills near Emerald Bay. Participants of the 10K will also experience some of the stunning vistas by starting at Inspiration Point above Emerald Bay. Expect fast individual times, the route is 99 percent downhill. Sports enthusiasts also get into the action with kayak, bike, and swim races either a la carte or as a triathlon.
New this year is the Tahoe Double Marathon, 52.4 miles of challenge from Spooner Summit to Pope Beach. The course is the Cal-Neva Marathon and the Lake Tahoe Marathon back to back.
Founded in 2010, Tough Mudder bills itself as “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet” with each Mudder taking on endurance challenges that test toughness, fitness, strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork.
Costume-clad and fired up, Tough Mudders run through a series 10 to 12 miles of hardcore obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test a competitor’s all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. Featuring wide runs, steep terrain and plenty of mud, Northstar offers an ideal location for Tough Mudder Tahoe Fall 2013.
With the most innovative courses, over one million inspiring participants worldwide have competed in dozens of Tough Mudder events worldwide. The competition also has a big heart, raising more than $5 million for the Wounded Warrior Project.
But it doesn’t take itself too seriously, either. After competitors have gone through it all, there’s a mob of folks and a live band waiting at the finish line with beers in hand, food on the barbecue and a full-on party to celebrate those participating in the toughest organized human event ever created.
